Sumter Landing Pastel In Progress:
I am scanning this piece as I go along to show the progression of how I usually develop a piece of my artwork.
I start with a slide or a photo so that I can capture the lighting and the moment of the subject form. Scroll down
to see the drawing and the stages of the artwork.

This is a photo of Sumter Landing in the Villages in Lady Lake Florida that I took during a recent visit. This is the photo
I am working from. I assumed at the start that this would be a more complicated work with all the vertical and horizontal lines.
There is a lot of surface detail that would have to be addressed. But I liked the composition and the overall perspective.
I also liked the overall feel of the place. So I was up to the challenge!

This is the drawing that I am starting with. I am working at 16" x 20". It took a long time to draw compared to the other works
I've done. But I wanted to make sure to have all my guides in place so that I would get the perspective correct. I don't know
at this point how I will address the fencing as it has open slots that shows through what is in the background. I guess I'm
going to have to do a background painting and go over it with the foreground. I think I'll make this one a pastel and pencil.

I am really liking the way this piece is coming together. I love the sky, but took a lot of artistic licence as the sky was nearly
clear in the photo. I'm still avoiding the fences! Have to work up the courage. I'm reluctant to ruin the work I've already done.
Don't want to have to start over - which is exactly what I usually do when I don't like the work I've done to a piece.
But in this case since I've scanned the drawing, I'll print it out and use the same drawing if I have to do that - don't want
to have to redraw it too!

Well…here is is half finished. I really like what has happened with this piece. Instead of putting a lot of planning into how
I was going to go about the fencing, I just took it a section at a time and just let it happen. I did do a lot of over-"painting"
in the background. But I really like the way that looks. I had a hard time with the dormers on the multi-colored building in the
background. Since there is not a lot of detail on the photo in that area, I had some trouble with the perspective.
It's passable and I hope won't be real important to the finished work.

Here is the final finished painting. The detail in the decking does not show up well in this low resolution version of the painting.
I like what it has turned out to be. It's not as "hard" as some of my other paintings. Although there is a lot of vibrant color.
Hope you like it too! It's been fun!!
