Tagua Nut Ivory is a dense, hard product of the rainforest that would not be used as a food source and would go to waste except for this type of use. It ages and can be worked almost exactly as animal ivory. Its use encourages natural reforestation of the rainforest and provides a source of income for the people of that region.

Other Ivory used in these designs are either recycled piano ivory, pre-70's stock or mammoth (mastadon) ivory. Mammoth (mastadon) ivory has natural color variances due to the absorbtion of minerals that was in the ground where it was buried for thousands of years. I only use LEGAL ivory in my scrimshaw designs.
